School bus issues highlight bumpy start to the school year

HALIFAX -- This week’s scramble by Stock Transportation and the Halifax Regional Centre for Education is just one example of the general state of confusion that the education system is in. Many parents in the Halifax area were left without confirmed bussing information for their child as late as yesterday.

“As students, teachers, and administrators head back to school today we know there are many challenges that still need to be dealt with,” said NDP Education Spokesperson Claudia Chender. “The government needs to make sure all specialists positions are filled, and work to repair its relationship with teachers. It does not instill confidence when something as basic as bussing seems like more than the system can handle.”

The Liberal government’s decision to eliminate all English language school boards in Nova Scotia means parents are left with few options beyond regional staff to resolve issues when there are problems like this week’s bussing situation.

“Without school boards, parents no longer know who to contact when there are problems. The Education Minister needs to provide a clear and transparent way for parents to address their many concerns,” said Chender.

Government plans for enhanced School Advisory Councils were just released last week and the Provincial Advisory Council on Education has yet to be appointed.
