New gender marker rules an important advancement of 2SLGBTQ+ rights
Halifax -- NDP 2SLGBTQ+ Affairs spokesperson Susan Leblanc made the following statement about today’s announcement that will allow an X as an option for gender identity or have no gender displayed on provincial documents:
“Today is an important day in the advancement of 2SLGBTQ+ rights and a win for those who have fought so long for this. Including an X as an option on provincial IDs means people aren’t restricted in how their gender is represented on official documents.
Making these changes is a simple thing that will help protect people of diverse gender identities from harassment and discrimination.”
In the fall of 2018, the NDP introduced legislation to create gender-neutral ID options. The NDP has also introduced legislation to update Nova Scotia’s laws to remove binary and exclusionary language.
