NDP will reverse corporate tax handouts and invest in the needs of real people
Halifax- Today, NDP Leader Gary Burrill met with local business owner Kat Cochrane about the struggles they faced during the last eighteen months and how the Rankin Liberals are siding with big business while leaving real people like Cochrane behind.
“Last year the Liberals gave a $70 million corporate tax cut to big business while hard-working people like Kat carried the burden of not being able to work,” said Burrill. “Kat protected their employees benefits during the many lockdowns, provides good jobs and is an important part of the community.”
Small and local businesses, like Cochrane’s, provide up to 75 per cent of private sector jobs in Nova Scotia. Yet in 2020, the Liberals cut the corporate income tax rate from 16 per cent to 14 per cent handing over $70.5 million to big business, no strings attached.
“I live in the community where I work. The people who work for me live in this community. I did my best to protect their benefits as they aren’t just employees, they are my neighbours,” said Cochrane. “The Liberals made lots of announcements but the money was so hard to qualify for. It hurt me and my employees to see so much money go to large companies when we were trying to keep our business alive.”
An NDP government will reverse the Liberal corporate tax cuts and put real people at the front and centre of government decisions.
“The choice in this election is clear,” said Burrill. “A massive corporate tax giveaway and $209 million in cuts from the Liberals, or the NDP, who will stand up for the real people and the small businesses of Nova Scotia.”
Burrill will campaign today in Halifax Needham, Clayton Park West, Bedford South and Bedford Basin.
