Statement by NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender on Labour Day
HALIFAX – NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement ahead of Labour Day:
“As we celebrate Labour Day on Monday, we take a moment to celebrate the victories and achievements of working people throughout Nova Scotia.
Increasingly, Nova Scotians are having challenges making ends meet. Paycheques are falling far behind rising costs. That’s why New Democrats continue to fight for a living wage in Nova Scotia. It shouldn’t be controversial to believe that a full-time job should be enough to buy groceries, pay for housing, and provide for you and your family.
Similarly, if the past few years have taught us anything, it’s that people need to stay home when they are sick. That’s why we continue to fight to legislate 10 paid sick days. No one should have to decide between getting well and being able to buy groceries.
We also continue to push the Houston government to join all federal parties, including the Conservatives, to ban scab labour in Nova Scotia. All workers have the right to organize and negotiate fairly, which is why we will be looking for the Houston government to move this bill quickly through the Legislature this fall.
The Nova Scotia NDP will always advocate for all workers in Nova Scotia. Together, gains are being made for working people across the province. Happy Labour Day!”
