Statement by NDP Leader Gary Burrill on Ontario passing $15 minimum wage law

Halifax – NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement on the Ontario government’s successful passing of legislation to increase that province’s minimum wage to $15/hour by 2019:

“The Ontario government has done a commendable thing--passed legislation to implement a $15 minimum wage in 2019. Meanwhile, in our province, minimum wage workers are the lowest paid in the country.

We can only make our economies work if people are able to make ends meet.

I have called on Stephen McNeil repeatedly to consider following the path of Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, and increase Nova Scotia’s minimum wage to $15. He has refused to even have the conversation. Today, I am calling on the Premier to reconsider his position, and follow the lead of his Liberal counterparts in Ontario.”
