Statement by Lisa Roberts on Nova Scotia Human Rights Awards
HALIFAX - Lisa Roberts, NDP MLA for Halifax Needham, made the following statement on the 2018 Nova Scotia Human Rights Award being given to Eric Smith:
“The granting of this award to Eric Smith is a chance to remember the struggles that led to sexual orientation becoming a protected ground in Nova Scotia. My office was pleased to nominate him for his history of leadership in the LGBTQ+ community and on the issue of HIV/AIDS. He bore a great cost both personally and professionally as we made that advancement in human rights in Nova Scotia.
There is still so much to be done to achieve equity for LGBTQ+ people and for those living with HIV/AIDS, but it is important to take a moment and honour those who have fought to build a more accepting and inclusive world.
Congratulations to Eric, and all those being honoured today.”
