Statement from Lenore Zann on Treaty Day

Halifax -- Lenore Zann, NDP Spokesperson for Aboriginal Affairs and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, made the following statement today in recognition of Treaty Day in Nova Scotia:

“On Treaty Day, we recognize the unfinished business of treaties, signed centuries ago by British settlers and the people of Mi’kma’ki. We still have a long way to go in Nova Scotia towards respecting Indigenous peoples’ right to environmental consultation, learning from the shameful experience of residential schools, and addressing the social determinants of health in Mi’kmaw communities.

It’s time for the government to step up its work to not only celebrate the diversity of Indigenous culture in our province, but listen and learn from those who are leading the way in education, healing, and justice.

Wherever you are in Mi’kma’ki, please take a moment today to reflect on the meaning of the treaties and what each of us can do to honour their spirit of peace and friendship. Thank you. Wela’lin.”
