Statement by Lenore Zann on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

HALIFAX – NDP Status of Women Spokesperson Lenore Zann made the following statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

“Today we stand with survivors of gender-based violence, and remember those who have not survived. We do so in a context where women, girls and trans persons are subjected to the daily harms of misogyny—physical and sexual assaults, harassment, abusive relationships, and the structural violence of poverty.

We remember that Indigenous women, queer and trans women, racialized women, disabled women, and incarcerated women are disproportionately affected. We remember, and at the same time, we commit ourselves to action.

We can help prevent violence as individuals, and we can act collectively to address the root causes of violence. The NDP caucus is committed to increasing support for community-based organizations working on gender-based violence, to reducing vulnerability by eliminating poverty, and to addressing barriers to equity.”
