Social workers need more support from Liberal government

Halifax -- NDP Community Services Spokesperson Susan Leblanc made the following statement in response to the College of Social Workers’ campaign #childwelfareonthebrink:

“The newest call for support by the social workers of our province cannot go unanswered. The Liberal government has left social workers to hold our child welfare system together and they can’t do it alone. It’s essential that the government provide the resources and staff needed to ensure the children of Nova Scotia get the help they need and deserve.”

The NDP has called for a Child and Youth Advocate for Nova Scotia. This office would create a public watchdog to ensure that children and youth have access to the services they need.

Between 2013-14 and 2016-17, short-term illness hours among social workers in the public sector increased almost 10,000 hours from 16,513 to 26,105.
