Research and Policy Analyst - Halifax, NS

The Nova Scotia NDP Caucus is seeking a full-time Research and Policy Analyst to join our team. The Research and Policy Analyst will work directly with the NDP Members of the Legislative Assembly and Leader to propose and promote progressive ideas and policies through legislative proposals, legislative committee support, public outreach, stakeholder consultations, and other means.

This position is a permanent, unionized, full-time position with a variable schedule.

Job Responsibilities: The ideal candidate for this position will have strong writing and editing skills. They must also be comfortable managing several competing priorities and tasks in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment. This position requires both a strong attention to detail and the ability to work quickly and adapt on the spot.

Job Duties and Details:

The responsibilities of the Research and Policy Analyst include:

• Researching and analyzing emerging current affairs, including identification of new issues for the attention of NDP MLAs and staff, within an assigned set of research areas.
• Writing clear and concise briefing notes for Caucus members on important issues.
• Analyzing legislation, government programs, economic data, public policy issues, reports, and other relevant materials.
• Preparing speaking notes for committee meetings, debates in the legislature, speeches to stakeholder groups, and other events as required.
• Providing background for news releases, direct mail, correspondence, speeches, and other communications materials.
• Liaising with outside interest groups to provide NDP MLAs and caucus staff with background information.
• Delivering accurate information in a timely way, using relevant and verifiable sources.

Qualifications and Skills:

The Research and Policy Analyst will possess the following qualifications:

• A Master’s degree in a relevant field, a law degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excellent writing and editing skills.
• Excellent interpersonal communication, computer and organizational skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines.
• Familiarity with the New Democratic Party, its policies and structure.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
• Knowledge of government processes and current issues is an asset.
• Bilingualism in French and English is an asset. Candidates must be available to work extended hours, including evenings, while the Legislature is sitting (usually two sessions per year of approximately four to six weeks each).

Compensation:

The NDP Caucus offers a competitive salary with cost-shared health, dental, and pension benefits. Salary band is 2,506.45 bi-weekly.
