NSNDP Statement on Transgender Day of Visibility
HALIFAX – The following is a statement from NSNDP 2SLGBTQIA+ Affairs critic Lisa Lachance:
“Transgender Day of Visibility is a day to recognize the strength, resilience, and contributions of transgender and non-binary people in Nova Scotia and beyond.
But this year, we mark this day against a troubling backdrop. Across Canada and the United States, we are seeing a rise in hate-fueled rhetoric and attacks against the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Nova Scotian businesses that have shown their support for inclusion have recently been targeted with vandalism.
Everyone has a right to be who they are, and we must be clear in defending that right. Critical to this work is the long-awaited updated Student Code of Conduct with guidelines for respecting 2SLGBTQIA+ students’ names and pronouns.
It is up to all of us – elected leaders, community members and allies – to loudly and publicly take a stand. We must push back against increasing discrimination and reaffirm our commitment to a province that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive for all.”
