NSNDP marks McDonough’s legacy on 40th anniversary of leadership win

HALIFAX -- NDP Leader Gary Burrill made the following statement to mark the 40th anniversary of Alexa McDonough’s election as leader of the NSNDP:

“The election of Alexa as leader of the Nova Scotia NDP on November 16, 1980, making her the first woman to lead a major political party in Canada, is a major milestone in the history of our province.

So much of significance has flowed from that day -- including the way Alexa’s abiding interest in people has become the signature of our Party, and the fact that today’s Nova Scotia NDP caucus has the highest percentage of women of any caucus elected with official party status, in any jurisdiction, in the history of the country.”
