Registries Saved: NDP Position Vindicated

The NDP Caucus are feeling vindicated in their efforts to save the motor vehicle, land, and joint stock registries from privatization by the McNeil government.  Today, Service Nova Scotia Minister Mark Furey announced his department would take a Government-led approach to upgrading the registries, a position the NDP has championed from the outset.

Leader Gary Burrill says “I am pleased the Government has decided to keep the registries wholly within the public domain.  I am disappointed the Government had to spend close to a million dollars to arrive at this obvious conclusion.”

The NDP called for an emergency debate in the fall sitting of the Legislature to address the McNeil government’s consideration of privatizing the registries.  MLA Sterling Belliveau says “I said in the fall that upgrading the registries should be viewed as an investment.  Historical evidence in this province has shown that when private companies control public assets, less benefits accrue to Nova Scotians.”
