Premier should provide relief to Cape Breton as requested

October 14, 2016

For Immediate Release

SYDNEY – Following questions from the NDP today about why provincial money has not yet started to go to people in need in Cape Breton after the major storm this week, Premier McNeil announced a donation to the United Way to help address pressing needs. Despite a request from CBRM Mayor Cecil Clarke for $1.5 million in immediate relief, the province will donate $500,000.

“I welcome the announcement today from the Premier, and trust the United Way to help the people of Cape Breton, but I also trust the Mayor of CBRM when he says this is not enough,” said  Gary Burrill, Leader of the NDP. “Within a week of the Fort McMurray wildfire disaster, NDP Premier Rachel Notley had pre-loaded debit cards in the hands of everyone who was in need. That’s the kind of immediate action we need.”

Thousands of people across Cape Breton have been impacted by the remnants of Hurricane Matthew.  There are still people with no power and others whose homes are unlivable.
