NDP introduces legislation to protect Seniors Pharmacare and to eliminate HST on Funerals

Halifax, NS – The NDP Caucus is introducing two new pieces of legislation today.  The first is a bill to protect Seniors’ Pharmacare and the second is a bill to eliminate the provincial portion of HST on funerals.

NDP Health Critic and MLA for Sackville-Cobequid, Dave Wilson, will introduce the bill to protect Senior’s Pharmacare.  If adopted, this bill would prevent the government from making major changes to the Seniors’ Pharmacare Program without a vote in the legislature.  In January, the Liberals attempted to make changes that would have seen premium increases for thousands of seniors.

“The Liberals tried to charge thousands of seniors more in premiums for pharmacare.  Fortunately, Nova Scotians made their voices heard loud and clear. Our bill will protect seniors from the whims of the Liberals,” says Wilson.

NDP Leader in the House and MLA for Dartmouth South, Marian Mancini, will introduce the legislation to eliminate the provincial portion of the HST on funerals.  This bill is in line with the NDP’s long-held position that basic essentials should not be taxed.

“People pay taxes all their lives; surely we can say that funerals should be tax-free,” says Mancini.
