Facts: Health and Wellness–Wait Times

Mental Health

Wait times for community-based mental health services are on the rise at the same time as the    government and provincial health authority are trying to direct more people to such care.

The average wait time for 90 per cent of adults from the period from July to September 2013 was 75 days. The number increased to 105 days for the same 2015 period.

Home Care and Long-Term Care

  • The wait list for home care has risen more than 50 per cent over the past two years, while the wait list in the western health care zone has more than doubled.
  • In two years, the western zone wait list has grown by nearly 170 per cent.

 

Hip and Knee Replacements

  • Nova Scotia has the longest wait times in Canada for hip and knee replacement procedures.
  • Data in this year’s Wait Times for Priority Procedures in Canada, released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information shows that 52% of patients in Nova Scotia receive their hip replacements and 36% receive their knee replacements within the benchmark of 182 days.
