Explanation needed about $70 million owed to the Nova Scotia Health Authority

October 12, 2016

For immediate release.

HALIFAX – The NDP is looking for answers about why the Nova Scotia Health Authority was forced to dip into restricted funds to cover operational expenses when the Department of Health and Wellness owed the Health Authority more than $70 million.

“When it comes to taking care of our health system, any issues around cash flow and access to resources are of grave concern,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill.

Today’s report from the Auditor General noted that the Nova Scotia Health Authority was forced to use $7 million in restricted funds to cover expenses, despite ten times that amount being owed by the Department of Health and Wellness to the Health Authority.

“It seems odd in a situation where the Nova Scotia Health Authority was facing a cash crunch, Minister Glavine didn’t work more quickly to transfer any money owing,” said Burrill.
