Cuts to Cape Breton nursing homes almost double initial reports

November 4, 2016

For Immediate Release

SYDNEY – After several requests from the NDP and a Freedom of Information request, the Liberal government finally released a document outlining the extent of the cuts to nursing homes across the province. The numbers show that the cuts to nursing homes in Cape Breton are almost double what was initially reported.  Eight nursing homes in Cape Breton County have seen a total of $474,199 in cuts.

“It’s clear that the health of people in Cape Breton is not a priority for the Liberals,” says Tammy Martin, NDP Candidate in Cape Breton Centre. “The Liberals have made major cuts to nursing homes, taken no real action on the doctor’s shortage, and eliminated the delivery unit at the Glace Bay hospital.  When will the Liberals invest in people’s health in Cape Breton?”

“Not only have Stephen McNeil and his government disrespected seniors and their families by cutting funding to nursing homes, but they have also disrespected seniors by being dishonest about it,” said NDP Leader Gary Burrill. “The Liberal government should reverse the cuts to long-term care and apologize to residents of nursing homes.”
