Building our Party in Cape Breton

April 25, 2016

Friends,

On April 14, 15 and 16, I visited Cape Breton for the first time since I was elected Leader of our Party. The hospitality of our Party members in Cape Breton was second to none. Most importantly, the reception to our Party’s message on addressing income inequality and eliminating poverty was received with thunderous applause.

I was thrilled to speak to a full house at the Grand Lake Fire Hall on Friday, April 15th. There is a real sense that after our great disappointments in the last provincial and federal elections it is now time to rebuild our Party in Cape Breton on the basis of social, environmental and economic justice. Huge thanks to Kendra Coombes and Lois MacDougall, and the NDP members of Cape Breton Centre and Glace Bay, for organizing such a fantastic event.

While in Cape Breton, I also had the pleasure of meeting with Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) Mayor Cecil Clarke and his staff, who briefed me on some of the major economic issues facing CBRM. Later in the afternoon, I met with representatives from the Atlantic Coastal Action Program (ACAP) who spoke passionately about some of the environmental issues facing Cape Breton. I also was pleased to sit down for supper with the Executive of the Cape Breton District Labour Council. And it was my privilege to visit the picket line of the Typographical Union, the journalists who are on strike at the Chronicle Herald.

We were fortunate to receive quite a bit of media coverage of the meetings in Cape Breton. On Friday the 15th, I was on CBC Information Morning with Steve Sutherland to talk about income inequality. Later, I did an interview with The Coast 89.7 FM in Glace Bay. And finally, our public town hall was covered by the Cape Breton Post on Saturday, April 16. You can read about the event here:

As Leader, I look forward to working in Cape Breton every chance I get. I will next be in Cape Breton on Monday, May 2 for the AGM of the Victoria-The Lakes NDP Association. The meeting is at St. Michael’s Hall in Baddeck at 6:30 pm. All are welcome!

I look forward to helping rebuild our Party in Cape Breton and across the province. Please let me know if there are events you’d like to have me speak at.

In solidarity and hope,

Gary
