Building Our NDP Together
June 14, 2016
“I’d like to help. What can I do?” No more important words can be spoken in the work of building a political movement, and I’m grateful for how often we’re hearing them these days in the course of organizing around the province.
Here are a few ideas:
Take part in the life of your Electoral District Association (EDA). EDAs are the life blood of the democracy of our Party–the source of policy initiatives, campaigns, leadership and more. To be in touch with the EDA in your area, contact our Party President, Bill Matheson at President@nsNDP.ca.
Send us your photos. Something we have really appreciated these past few months are the photos members have sent us of local NDP gatherings, meetings, and public events. Please–keep them coming. They help us maintain visibility in the social media world, as well as document our history. You can send them to our Provincial Secretary, Mike Poworoznyk at ProvSec@nsNDP.ca.
Join our social media team. It’s exciting to see more and more people liking, sharing and commenting on our Facebook and Twitter content. Perhaps you would like to take a more active role in helping amplify our voice online. If so, contact Mike (email above) to join our social media team.
Help out on the ground. We have recently launched a Leader’s Tour that includes stops in communities across Nova Scotia. If you have an idea for an event I should attend, or are willing to help set something up in your area, please let me know. Members have been wonderful to spread the word about meetings and forums; please keep doing so–it’s great to see both familiar and new faces at these events.
Consider attending Convention. Our 2016 NSNDP Convention is less than two weeks away, and registration is still open. This will be a significant opportunity to connect with other members, participate in the democratic life of our Party, and discover ways of getting involved. To find out more and to register, visit https://nsndp.ca/tc-events/convention2016.
Join a Party committee. At Convention, members will be elected to chair our Party’s committees. These are the working groups that develop our policies, bring focus to issues such as the environment and gender equity, build our membership, and more. If you are interested in participating in a committee, contact our Nomination co-chairs: Kaley Kennedy (firstname.lastname@example.org) and David Wallbridge (email@example.com).
Someone once said that organizing is just a fancy word for building relationships. That’s true. It’s also true that when people’s energies align towards a common purpose, there are no limits to what can be accomplished.
In solidarity and hope,
