Nova Scotians’ concerns must be prioritized at new Health Committee

HALIFAX - NDP members of the new Standing Committee on Health are ready to get to work to amplify people’s concerns and frustrations with the growing health care crisis. The committee will meet for the first time today at 3:30 PM.

“Everyday, I hear about issues that need to be addressed in our health care system, and our NDP Caucus welcomes another opportunity to bring those issues forward, demand accountability from the Liberal government, and offer solutions,” said Tammy Martin, NDP Health and Wellness spokesperson. “The Premier may not be willing to admit it, but Nova Scotians know there is a crisis in our clinics, our hospitals, and our nursing homes.”

Martin, along with Susan Leblanc, MLA for Dartmouth North, will serve as the NDP Caucus’ representatives on the committee. NDP representatives will be pushing for the committee to hold televised meetings at least every two weeks, with time set aside for scheduled conversations with key witnesses, and time reserved for emerging issues.

“The public has a lot of questions about emergency care, primary care and long-term care,” said Leblanc. “We are hoping that the witnesses and discussions at this committee will highlight the need for increased action and investment in people’s access to health care services.”

The first meeting of the Standing Committee on Health will be broadcast on Legislative Television, available online here.
