New Democrats call on Houston government to sign national pharmacare deal

HALIFAX – NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement in response to the federal Pharmacare Act becoming law last night:

“With the fantastic news that the federal Pharmacare Act has become law, New Democrats are calling on the Houston government to sign the bilateral agreement required to provide universal, single-payer access to birth control as part of the first phase of a national universal pharmacare program.
The cost of birth control is a serious barrier for many people and we have a historic opportunity to give Nova Scotians a break under this new plan.
Nova Scotia must sign onto this program immediately. This is long overdue.”

The Nova Scotia NDP tabled legislation in November 2021 to ensure that anyone without coverage could get birth control for free under the provincial MSI plan.
