New Democrat housing plan would help Cape Bretoners afford their homes
SYDNEY – During an announcement in Cape Breton on Friday morning, NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender laid out her party’s commitment to making housing more affordable.
Chender met with Amber Tapley, a mom who says the NDP’s Affordable Homes Rebate will give her family hundreds of dollars a year to help her afford her rent.
“Here in Cape Breton more than half of all households could receive this rebate. It will mean hundreds of dollars more money for groceries, bills, family activities, and other essentials whether you rent or own,” said Chender. “Nova Scotians are feeling squeezed by the high cost of housing. Your home is the largest bill you have to cover every month. We know that times are tough right now, and that’s why we’re fighting for you.”
New Democrats will also protect renters by slashing allowable rent increases and banning fixed term leases, and address housing supply by building 30,000 affordable homes across the province, including hundreds of rent-to-own starter homes to open the pathway to homeownership for more Nova Scotians.
“The NDP is the only party prepared to tackle the housing crisis in Cape Breton with solutions that help everyday people. We’re offering relief to Cape Bretoners to ensure that they can build the life they want on this beautiful island,” said Chender. “There’s no other way around it – Tim Houston and the Conservatives are leaving Nova Scotians, and Cape Bretoners, behind. A New Democrat government will always stand up for you and fight for what you need.”
Chender’s New Democrats have also committed to doubling CBRM’s municipal finance grant to $30 million in their first year of government and make the change permanent.
