NDP to nominate Larry Duchesne as Cumberland South byelection candidate

SPRINGHILL--Tomorrow, New Democratic Party members in Cumberland South will gather to nominate Larry Duchesne as the party’s 2018 byelection candidate. The meeting will take place at 2:00 PM at All Saints Parish Hall, 92 Main St., Springhill.

Duchesne is a retired school teacher and newspaper reporter. He holds a BA from Mount St. Vincent University and a B.Ed. from Dalhousie University, and he is an active community volunteer in the Oxford area. Duchesne has run for the NDP several times in Nova Scotia and PEI, and was the PEI NDP leader for three years in the 1990s. He is the father of four children, all living and working in Nova Scotia.

"This byelection is a important opportunity to tell the McNeil government that we've had enough of joblessness, depopulation and disempowerment,” said Duchesne. “Electing a New Democrat in Cumberland will be an important step to building the social democratic province we want. That can only bring good things for Cumberland South and all of rural Nova Scotia.”

NDP leader Gary Burrill will speak at the event along with Truro-Bible Hill-Millbrook-Salmon River MLA Lenore Zann.

“Larry Duchesne will stand up for investment in our people’s health, education, job opportunities and incomes,” said Burrill. “When one in five children in our communities lives in poverty and people can’t get a family doctor, something is seriously wrong somewhere.”
