NDP celebrates World Water Day by calling for free well water testing

HALIFAX - To mark World Water Day the NDP Caucus is calling for free well water testing to ensure all Nova Scotians have access to clean water. The NDP Caucus introduced legislation on this issue last week in the House of Assembly.

“The province recommends having well water tested every six months for coliform bacteria, but the cost of doing so makes it extremely difficult for many people,” said Gary Burrill, NDP Leader. “This legislation would remove the financial barrier to well water testing, helping people ensure that their drinking water is clean and safe.”

About forty-six per cent of Nova Scotians rely on well water for drinking, cleaning and cooking. The cost of water testing can range from $50 to over $300, depending on location. The NDP bill would cover testing for bacteria, arsenic, lead and uranium.

“Water is our most precious resource. In the context of the current climate crisis and the extended droughts that have hit some regions of our province, the government should be placing a higher priority on protecting our water resources,” said Burrill.

In 2010, the former NDP government released a ten-year water resources strategy. There have been no updates to the strategy since the Liberal government was elected.
