Martin: Cape Breton in desperate need of more psychiatrists
New Waterford -- Cape Breton Centre MLA Tammy Martin made the following statement in response to news that the region’s lead psychiatrist is resigning:
“The people of Cape Breton can’t take much more. We were already desperately short of mental health care on the island and now the unsustainable workload doctors are expected to carry has cost us another specialist. When will Stephen McNeil and his Liberal government take the action needed to bring Cape Breton up to par with the rest of the province? When it comes to health care the Liberals are treating us like second-class citizens.”
The average wait time to access community-based mental health care in Cape Breton is 363 days.
