Leblanc: Nova Scotia must do more to protect trans rights
Halifax -- NDP Spokesperson for LGBTQ+ Affairs, Susan Leblanc, made the following statement in recognition of the Transgender Day of Remembrance:
“Today is an important day when we remember those who have lost their lives because of transphobia and recommit ourselves to the work that needs to be done to make sure the rights of trans folks are upheld.
The NDP has called on the Liberal government to create gender-neutral ID options and update our laws to remove binary and exclusionary language. The government must also ensure that trans individuals have full and easy access to the health and mental health care they need.
Making these changes is a simple thing that can help protect people of diverse gender identities from harassment and discrimination.”
The NDP introduced legislation in 2017 that would have eliminated gender markers on Nova Scotia health cards and allowed an “X” as an additional gender option on drivers’ licenses and other provincial IDs.
