Houston’s extended state of emergency keeps Windsor causeway aboiteau gates closed

HALIFAX – NDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement on the extended local state of emergency:

“The Houston Conservatives have made this a divisive issue yet again by extending the local state of emergency in the area around and including Pisiquid Lake. Yesterday, the Minister was asked over and over again why public safety requires the lake to be refilled and he was unable to give a direct answer.

The fact that this was originally done with no notice or input from the municipality, volunteer firefighters or the Glooscap Mi’kmaw community is especially concerning. When this became an issue, the then-Liberal government allowed communities to be pitted against each other, rather than trying to find common ground between the opposing sides. Now, the Houston government’s decision has renewed concerns without adequate explanation or input from the community.”
