Gender-based violence epidemic warrants meaningful and sustained response

HALIFAX – NDP Leader Claudia Chender made the following statement on The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women:

“As we mark National Day for Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we are reminded of the ongoing call for a meaningful and sustained response to the epidemic of gender-based violence in our province and across Canada.

In Nova Scotia, the Mass Casualty Committee has given us a path forward based on its review of the tragedy that took place on April 18 and 19, 2020.

Many Nova Scotia organizations continue the important work on the frontlines to prevent and respond to intimate-partner and gender-based violence. We call on the government to support these essential services through sustainable long-term funding and to implement the recommendations of the Mass Casualty Commission.

Without serious and sustained action, violence against women and gender-diverse people will continue in our province. The time to act is now.”

Anyone experiencing intimate partner violence or looking for information can contact the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia’s toll-free, 24/7 line at 1-855-225-0220.
