CHENDER: Nova Scotia must be ready for Trump tariffs
SYDNEY – The following is a statement from Nova Scotia NDP Leader Claudia Chender:
“The 25 per cent tariffs President Trump plans to impose could have devastating impacts on Nova Scotian workers and businesses. The livelihoods of thousands of Nova Scotians are at risk, and we need to be ready to respond.
Premier Houston needs to speak to Nova Scotians and bring people together. We continue our call for a task force to support affected workers, industries and communities. This group should explore options like grants or loans for exporters and producers to protect local jobs and review options for tax relief or financial support for Nova Scotians who will face rising costs on essential goods because of the tariffs.
Nova Scotia exported over $4 billion worth of goods to the U.S. last year alone. While other provinces have spent weeks meeting with labour, employers, and sector representatives, the Houston government has been silent on how they will protect people’s livelihoods and jobs in Nova Scotia.
We’ve known about the possibility of tariffs for months. We need a Nova Scotia approach. We need leadership to address the crisis that is now at our front door.”
