Caregiver Tax Credit would support Nova Scotians who care for sick family members: NSNDP

HALIFAX –The NSNDP is calling for the creation of a Caregiver Tax Credit to provide financial relief and support to Nova Scotians who care for sick family members, friends, or neighbours.

“Caregivers are an integral part of our health-care system, providing essential care that allows people to stay in their homes and communities and saves time and hours from our healthcare professionals,” said NSNDP Leader Claudia Chender. “Right now, too many unpaid caregivers are left without support because of strict eligibility rules. This tax credit will ensure more caregivers get the recognition and financial relief they deserve.”

Nova Scotia’s current Caregiver Benefit program excludes many caregivers due to income limits and eligibility restrictions.

New Democrats are proposing a $1,400 Caregiver Tax Credit, modelled after Manitoba’s successful program. The tax credit would build on rather than replace the current Caregiver Benefit program.

“This is something the Canadian Cancer Society and Caregivers Nova Scotia have been calling for,” said NSNDP Health Critic Rod Wilson. “Caring for a loved one is emotionally and financially demanding. This tax credit is a simple and fair solution to help those who give so much.”

New Democrats will introduce legislation to create a Caregiver Tax Credit later this month when the House of Assembly is back in session.

February 4 is World Cancer Day. According to the Canadian Cancer Statistics Dashboard, Nova Scotia was projected to have 7,500 cancer cases in 2024.
