Wilton must explain voting in favour of Bill 75

Mixed messages from Liberal candidate

NEW WATERFORD - Liberal candidate Dave Wilton needs to respond to images being circulating on-line showing the Liberal candidate promising a constituent he would vote against Bill 75, says NDP candidate Tammy Martin.

The supposed screen capture shows Wilton telling an unidentified constituent via text message, “I support the teachers 100%.” The constituent then adds, “I know that by voting against this legislation you will almost guarantee yourself public support.” Wilton responds by saying, “I hope so. The party is not happy with me… Lol.”

Martin says she is hearing a lot of concerns about this conversation on the doorsteps and she’s encouraging Wilton to clarify his remarks. She says people want to know why it appears Wilton promised to vote against legislation, only to do the exact opposite. All 33 McNeil Liberal MLAs stood in the House of Assembly and voted in favour of the controversial bill.

“I’m hearing a lot of outrage about these comments and I think Mr. Wilton owes it to voters to clarify any potential confusion around the matter. The struggle to obtain a fair collective bargaining process is an important part of our history in Cape Breton Centre and teachers and other workers who have lost their rights under the McNeil government deserve straight answers, not excuses," said Martin. “It appears Mr. Wilton made a promise to somebody and didn’t keep it. This is a matter of trust and the public deserves an explanation.”
