Statement: NDP Energy Spokesperson responds to news of BP spill

SYDNEY -- NDP Spokesperson for Energy Dave Wilson made the following statement in response to news there has been a spill of drilling mud at the BP exploration site off the coast of Nova Scotia:

“Yesterday’s news about a spill off of our coast reinforces the concerns that have been raised by fishers, scientists, and environmentalists that we need more rigorous standards to protect our offshore environment.

Nova Scotia must insist on having a capping stack available within hours of the site, not days, similar to other jurisdictions.

Without this protection, the federal government is threatening our fisheries industry and coastal environment.”
