South Shore library solution shows importance of local decision making

HALIFAX - The South Shore Regional School Board with the South Shore Public Libraries and the local Home & School Association are working on a solution for a lack of library services at one of the local schools. Las year Bayview Community School learned they would only have funding for a librarian one day a week.

"We knew this was an issue for the community and with local support we've been able to come up with a solution," said Christian Maguire, SSRSB member for Mahone Bay. "The parents at this school and the South Shore Public Libraries came together with the board to make sure we could find a way to have library services for the students throughout the week."

The proposed plan is for the Bayview Community School library to be staffed Monday to Friday because of a partnership with South Shore Public Libraries.

“This is a perfect example of local decision making at work,” said NDP Spokesperson for Education Claudia Chender. “We know there are challenges with school boards, but in this case the school board was responsive to the needs of the community and was able to find a local solution that benefits students.”

The Liberal government is moving forward with plans to eliminate all English school boards in the province as recommend by the Glaze report.
