School has started but Liberals still hiring for pre-primary program

Still many concerns about government approach

HALIFAX – NDP Education and Early Childhood Development spokesperson Claudia Chender is raising concerns that parents still do not know when or if their children will start pre-primary. Today, the Liberal government announced only one school board has completed hiring for the program that is set to start any day.

“At this point, parents have no information on the start date of pre-primary. Staff still need to be hired. Classrooms are not set up. And, existing child care centres still have no assurances that their operations won’t be at risk,” said Chender.

A number of concerns have been raised about the Liberal approach to the new pre-primary system, including a lack of consultation with parents, early childhood educators, existing child care centres and teachers.

“The lack of communication from this government is unacceptable,” said Chender. “The Liberals should admit that their hasty and poorly-planned roll-out of this program doesn’t serve the needs of children and parents.”
