Mental health report not strong enough

Supports lacking for at-risk youth during summer months

NEW WATERFORD – NDP Health Spokesperson Tammy Martin says the report on mental health services for youth in Cape Breton doesn’t go far enough toward addressing the crisis.

“The school board asked the province to make sure there were supports in place for at-risk youth during the summer months. Nothing in this report even mentions that request,” said Martin. “Cape Breton needs resources now. The community has been pleading with government for help and a one-and-a-half page document is not adequate.”

Releasing this report in Halifax means that parents, health professionals, youth and other stakeholders in Cape Breton were unable to attend the launch.

“Will Minister Churchill and Minister Delorey come to Cape Breton and hold a public meeting to explain this report and the plan of action government will take?” asks Martin. “That’s the only way there will be any accountability to the people of Cape Breton.”
