Liberals must provide answers on delay in doctor program

McNeil still failing to recognize health care crisis

HALIFAX – NDP Leader Gary Burrill is concerned by reports today that the Liberal government has failed to recruit doctors to the locum program it announced in July 2016.

“Throughout the election, Stephen McNeil repeatedly told the people of our province that the Liberal locum program would help alleviate the health care crisis. Now, two weeks after election day, we find out the program is on hold,” said Burrill. “Given the Liberal record on doctors, I think the public deserves to know how yet another health care program has been botched.”

The Liberal government announced the locum program in July 2016. In the summer of 2016, the Health Authority said that the implementation was delayed because the program did not align with the timelines for signing contracts with new medical residents.

“Stephen McNeil’s words and actions show that he doesn’t recognize the crisis in our health care system,” said Burrill. “While families are waiting years for the care they need, the McNeil Liberals continue to drag their feet on finding real solutions and investing in our people’s health.”
