Freedom of Information request shows Liberals had no plan on pre-primary

Centres will lose enrollment with little to no notice

HALIFAX – Documents obtained by the NDP through a Freedom of Information requests shows the Liberals had no correspondence about pre-primary with child care providers until the day they announced the locations of the programs.

“The only communication the Minister had with the child care sector about pre-primary between September 2016 and July 2017 was the letter he sent out the day of the announcement of the sites,” said Claudia Chender, NDP Education and Early Childhood Development spokesperson . “It's no wonder the Liberal roll out of this program has caused so much anxiety amongst child care providers and parents.”

As a result of the late September start date for pre-primary, child care centres will lose enrollment with little to no notice, putting the centres in a difficult financial position.

"Again, the lack of consultation by this Liberal government could leave many parents in a lurch as child care centres facing potential loss of staff and enrollment may have to close," said Chender. “The Liberals should start listening to what parents and child care centres are telling them before it’s too late.”
